Upper East Side Custom Ripplefold Draperies
Here’s a news flash: Fabric drapes are not only for windows. This clever client asked us to design and install a very classy, ripplefold curtain on a specially-designed track to conceal a brick interior wall. Not only does this add a tranquil, neutral décor component to the space, but also provides sound absorption properties for a more quiet room. Brick offers no acoustical reduction value. There is a wide range of sound-dampening characteristics in the placement, fullness, thickness, and density of curtains.
The ripplefold style is gaining popularity for both function and visual appeal. When the drapes are open, they neatly “stack” together. In this residence, they most likely will stay closed while still offering the lovely, serpentine look. They glide comfortably along a ceiling-mounted track and can be operated with a cord, a wand or a small motor with a remote control. Typically custom-designed for length, width and fabric choice, ripplefold curtains are crafted with one piece of fabric more than twice the width and snapped into the hardware, which creates the interesting, undulating, wave pattern. They are especially coveted for maintaining their shape when they move.
Of course, they can be, and often are, installed to cover windows, but also are revered for a sophisticated technique to divide rooms, cover doorways or brick walls, use as shower curtains or to add a touch of mystery, like here. Certainly some guests will wonder: What lurks behind the curtain?
